There is a hormone called “Cortisol” in our brain which causes stress. Cortisol is a hormone which regulates a wide range of processes throughout the body, including immune responses and metabolism. Generally, cortisol is released with respect to fear by the adrenal glands as a part of the fight or flight mechanism but in today’s world, we are always in the mode of stress where the levels of cortisol are always high making us prone to many health and mental problems.
When there is an increase or excess release of cortisol in the brain for longer period affecting us in many ways like, it interferes with learning and memory, lower immune function and bone density, increase weight gain, blood pressure, cholesterol, heart disease… The list goes on and on.
On the other hand, there is also a hormone which causes us relaxation and peace with us which is called SEROTONIN. It is the hormone contributes to the wellness and happiness. It is believed that it helps to regulate mood and social behavior, appetite and digestion, sleep, memory, and sexual desire and function. In a nutshell, we know what cortisol is and what serotonin is and what they cause within us. Knowing the mechanism and foundations of these hormones, one can decrease the levels of stress hormone and increase the level of relaxation hormone for a healthy and wealthy life.
